Kaufmann Desert House

Built in 1946 in Palm Springs by Richard Neutra for Pittsburgh retail tycoon Edgar J. Kaufmann, the Desert House fuses glass, steel and stone in a pinwheel plan, with wings radiating from a central living and dining room. Large glazing and vertical aluminum louvers link indoors and outdoors and shade the house from desert heat. A rooftop open-air 'gloriette' was Neutra's way around zoning codes that forbade two-story structures.
