2003 BYU/Universidad Técnica del Norte thesis (English abstract + Spanish body) on hydroponic kidney tomatoes in an enlarged panqar huyu; key linguistic claim that panqar-huyu means Aymara "flower garden"/"cama de flores," created by Benson Institute. English abstract: Benson Institute created small subterranean greenhouse called "panqar-huyu," which in Aymara means "flower garden," to allow small/medium crops where Andean climate limits diversity. Spanish abstract: BAFI created semisubterranean micro-greenhouse Panqar huyu meaning "cama de flores" in Aymara. Study enlarged a panqar huyu, installed drip irrigation, dug channels to drain groundwater; community La Rinconada; two tomato varieties in sand, gravel (cascajo), and mixed substrates. Reports favorable outcomes: alternative crop reducing climate-related capital loss; improved daily diet/nutrition (vitamins A, B, C; malates; citric acids).
Single-community thesis; full statistical tables in PDF body not fully re-keyed here.
