UAF Cooperative Extension publication (HGA-00337) surveying home greenhouse styles in Alaska, including a pit greenhouse section on earth insulation benefits and higher construction/drainage costs. Defines pit greenhouses as built partially below ground, most commonly where topography suits (e.g., hillside with good sun exposure). States pit greenhouses usually have lower heating and cooling costs because earth insulation keeps them warmer in winter and cooler in summer. States they are relatively expensive to construct because reinforced walls are required in the pit and both interior and exterior drainage systems are usually needed to keep the pit dry. Publication also covers site selection (sun ≥8 hours preferred; wind protection; well-drained soil), styles, glazing, utilities, and ventilation at a home-greenhouse level.
General pit-greenhouse guidance for Alaska home gardeners — does not use the term walipini or cite Benson Bolivia design.
